Summer 2017 Boating & Nature Programs

Canoeing, Kayaking, Sailing, Paddleboarding, Bird Watching, Wildflower and Trail Hikes are in full swing this summer. We are offering more opportunities than ever before to get out and enjoy the beauty of Ashtabula County's natural resources. Registration is required and available online or in person at the Y and financial assistance is available for any of these programs. All YMCA boating programs are partially funded by a grant form the ODNR Division of Parks and Watercraft.

 

Ohio Boater Education Certificate: Take the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators approved OBEC class, and earn your Ohio boating certificate. This certificate, which never expires, is  required for anyone born on or after January 1, 1982 in order to operate any boat or personal watercraft over 10 horsepower in the state of Ohio. The course lasts just 8 hours including the test, and is full of useful information for anyone who owns any type of watercraft or just enjoys being on the water.

Kayak 101: Practice kayaking skills with instructors. Topics covered include strokes, safety, and what to do if your boat capsizes. Time will be spent exploring as well as learning strokes.
Ages: 12 and older (under 16 must be accompanied by an adult)

Intermediate Kayaking: These are formalized classes with student performance expectations. Topics include wind, weather, waves, safe paddling, care of equipment, various rescues for self and other boaters, strokes, maneuvering, nomenclature, boat carries, appropriate dress, loading, launching.

Paddling Destination and Theme Cruises: Learn about safe paddling while enjoying scenic environments. While there will be educational criteria the focus is on fun. All 4 hour classes are round trip; bring a sack lunch for a picnic at the turnaround point.

Intro to Stand Up Paddleboarding: Stand Up paddleboarding is one of the hottest new outdoor sports in recent years. This course will teach you all you need to know to get the most out of your SUP experience.  Topics covered include strokes, safety, and what to do if your board capsizes. Nature Walking Program: Come on out for a walk in a few of our county's great parks and trails! Bring your hiking boots, binoculars, cameras, and field guides, and enjoy nature with our Nature Coordinator. Please dress accordingly, as we will still walk in light rain and on muddy trails, and please wear proper footwear as a few of the trails require crossing creeks (Creek Walk programs will take place in the water).
